We’ve got RIM‘s all-new BlackBerrr 7 smartphone, the Torch 9860, in the house, so you know what that means — time for a little unboxing action! The unit I’m taking a quick look at is an unlocked handset courtesy of Negri Electronics. While Mike has already played with the Sprint Torch 9850, I’m anxious to see if this 3.7-inch display can give BlackBerry more cred in the rough and tumble all-touchscreen world.

For a peek at what this looks like in person, how snappy the 1.2 GHz processor and BlackBerry OS 7′s Liquid Graphics technology can be, and what typing on this is like, hit the video above. Independence Day is celebrated in Pakistan on 14th August each year. It commemorates the partition of India into two parts, India (mainly Hindu), and Pakistan (mainly Moslem), which was itself divided into two wings: East Pakistan and West Pakistan.

After a 60-year formal and generally unarmed struggle for independence from the British Empire, Pakistan came into existence at the stroke of midnight on 14th August 1947. On that date, in accordance with Britain’s Indian Independence Act of July 1947, the British partitioned the British Indian Empire into the two sovereign states of India and Pakistan. The central part of the empire, with a Hindu majority, would become India, while the Muslim majority areas in the Northwest (West Punjab, Baluchistan, and Sindh provinces) and Northeast (East Bengal) would become the state of Pakistan. Pakistan’s Independence Day is observed on 14th August, while India celebrates its independence on 15th August.

Independence in both India and Pakistan are inextricably linked to two people. One will forever go down in history for leading his battles by refusing to fight. The other went on to become the first leader of his country. The two leaders were, of course, Mathatma Gandhi (Hindu) and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Modern day Pakistan consists of four major parts called provinces. The Punjab, Sind, Balochistan and North West Frontier Province (usually known as NWFP). It also governs part of Kashmir which is currently split between Pakistan and India and which has been the subject of ongoing dispute ever since partition.

The modern state of Pakistan was established on the partition of modern India, but the country has an extensive history that overlaps with the histories of Ancient India, Afghanistan and Persia (modern day Iran).

The whole region is a crossroad of historic trade routes, including the Silk Road, and was either conquered or settled over thousands of years by many groups, including Dravidians, Indo-Aryans, Persians, Ancient Macedonians, Greeks, Scythians, Parthians Kushans, White Huns, Afghans, Arabs, Turks, and Mongols. The Indus River region was the site of several ancient cultures including Mehrgarh, one of the world’s earliest known towns, and the Indus Valley Civilisation (2500BC to 1500BC) at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.

The War of Independence in 1857, also known as the Indian Mutiny, was the region’s last major armed struggle against the British Raj, and laid the foundations for the generally unarmed freedom struggle led by the Indian National Congress (a political party and not a national parliament).

The Muslim League rose to popularity in the late 1930s, amid fears of under-representation and neglect of Muslims in wider Indian politics. On 29th December 1930, Allama Iqbal’s presidential address called for a separate Muslim state in the North-West and North-Eastern of “South Asia” – which referred to the Indian sub-continent. Muhammad Ali Jinnah espoused the Two Nation Theory and led the Muslim League to adopt the Lahore Resolution of 1940 (popularly known as the Pakistan Resolution), which ultimately led to the creation of Pakistan.

The partition of British India resulted in communal riots across India and Pakistan as millions of Muslims moved to Pakistan, and millions of Hindus and Sikhs moved to India. Disputes arose over several princely states – including Jammu and Kashmir, whose ruler had acceded to India, while the majority of the population favoured independence. This led to the First Kashmir War (1948) ending with Pakistan occupying roughly one third of the state.

From 1947 to 1956, Pakistan was a Dominion in the Commonwealth of Nations. The republic declared in 1956 was stalled by a coup d’etat staged by Ayub Khan (1958–69), who was president during a period of internal instability, and a Second Kashmir War with India in 1965. His successor, Yahya Khan (1969–71) had to deal with a devastating cyclone which caused an estimated half a million deaths in East Pakistan and left the whole of Bengal in a state of ruin.

Economic and political dissent in East Pakistan led to violent political repression and tensions escalating into a civil war (the Bangladesh Liberation War) and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and ultimately the secession of East Pakistan as the independent state of Bangladesh.

The history of the modern countries of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh is inextricably linked and their current status can be traced back to 1947 and independence from the United Kingdom.

What is Shab-E-Barat
Shab-E-Barat means the night of forgiveness or Day of Atonement. People pray to god both in preparation for Ramadan and for the forgiveness of the sins committed by them. The festival is also known as Boraks Nigh.
In Persian language, ‘Shab’ means night and ‘Barat’ means – the night of commission or assignment. In Arabic language, however, the day is known as Lailatul Bara’at, meaning the night of emancipation. Some though see Shab-E-Barat as the night of good fortune and a popular legend says that on this night the Prophet visits each house and relieves the pains of suffering humanity.

The night of Shab-E-Barat also commemorates the entry of Muhammad into the city of Mecca. However, Shia Muslims associate this night with the birth of their last Imam.

Introduction

The festival of Shab-E-Barat is celebrated with great prompt and enthusiasm by Muslims all over the world. According to Muslim beliefs, Shab-e-Baraat is the night when ‘Allah’ – the Almighty arranges the affairs of the following year. It is a night of worship and prayers for all Muslims. On Shab-E-Barat god writes the destinies of all men for the coming year by taking into account the deeds committed by them in the past.

In 2011, the divine festival of Shab-E-Barat will be celebrated on July 17th, 2011. According to mythology, Shab-E-Barat festival is celebrated either on the thirteenth or on the fourteenth day of Shaban, the eighth month of the Muslim year. This happens to be fifteen days before the beginning of Ramadan.
